| Oneself according to oneself -T. Pittman (Black and White pencil on 19x23 grey toned paper) |
This was my perception of myself a few months ago. I drew this self portrait to express who I thought I was. The perception of myself differs (from myself) quite periodically. Are you the same way?
I was laughing my ass off watching Bridesmaids; like I always do when watching that movie; and 2 of the main characters are debating the way their friend has changed. I think it is funny how the scene makes fun of how everybody sees themselves, and how their perception often determines the way they see other people. Here is some of the dialogue:
[referring to Lillian not joining them to play tennis]
Annie: Well, you know, she's not really that into sports. Even when we were little she didn't like anything that was too competitive.
Helen: Oh, she certainly enjoys playing tennis now. It's funny how people change, isn't it?
Annie: Yeah. I mean, I don't know. Do people really change?
Helen: Mmm. I think they do.
Annie: Yeah. But I mean like, still stay who they are, pretty much.
Helen: I think we change all the time.
Annie: I think we stay the same, but grow I guess, a little bit.
Helen: I think if you're growing, then you're changing.
Annie: But I mean we're changing from who we are, which we always stay as.
Helen: Not really. I don't think so.
Annie: I think so.
Helen: I don't.
I will continue to change and grow, and stay the same person, I guess. haha. What do you think?

ReplyDeleteI have changed a lot from the child I was, the teenager I was, and even the right-out-of-high-school-trying-to-find-her-place-in-the-world-young-adult of two years ago. But the essence of Diana still stays in tact. I am still me whether it's Diana-the-yogi, Diana-the-anthropologist, or Diana-the-artist. It's kind of like Barbie. You can dress her up as a doctor, or a ballerina, or an astronaut, but she's still Barbie. Even my personality has changed over the years, but it's just another side of me that has always been there.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you captured exactly my point. Dead on!

Whether you want ancient Greek philosophy, or modern lesbian rock and roll, I think it is clear that you cannot escape change. We are always changing. Thankfully we get to choose if that change makes the world a better place...or not.
