Many of you may remember the first writing exercise I read aloud in class. For those of you who haven't or don't remember, here is a quick summary of part of it.

On September 2nd, 2012 I went to a small Musical Theatre Disney themed party in the Fine Arts House. We all crowded on the couches and gawked at the beauty that is Tangled. The gathering could not have been more innocent. Afterwards some people left and some people went upstairs. Unfortunately, I was one that went upstairs. There, some alcohol was presented. After a little bit of pressure, I tried a couple sips, just to see what it tasted like. Cringing at the burning sensation, I went into a separate room, leaving two friends alone.

The girl, lets call her Jean, laid on the bed and asked for a massage. Both of the teens were drunk and things proceeded farther than Jean was comfortable with. The next thing I know she runs to me extremely upset. Shocked and confused, I took her back to her building and spent the night with her coming to the conclusion that college parties were not my scene.

I thought that rough night was long gone and over with. However, I was sorely mistaken. Just yesterday I woke up to an email reading,

JESSICA,
I have received an incident report dated September 02, 2012 alleging that you violated the following Residence Hall policy (ies):
Residential Education/1. Alcohol/a. Students in a room with Alcohol are in violation of policy.

Student Code/Behavioral Misconduct/9. Use, possession or distribution of alcoholic beverages of any type on University premises except as permitted by law and University regulations
In order to properly address this matter, I need to hear your side of the story. Please contact me to arrange a meeting to take place no later than by 5pm on December 14, 2012."

Shocked, I fervently called Jean to ask about the situation. She explained that she had mentioned the incident to her counselor who called the dean of students who forwarded the case to housing. At least I knew what was going on at this point. Immediately I set up an appointment and faced my fate."Dear
The woman

I spoke with was extremely friendly and kept trying to make jokes and small talk. Attempting to be polite I forced myself to smile along, while on the inside wanting to scream "just tell me what the consequences are..." Eventually, she did, and I took that wish back.

I have been found guilty of violating the alcohol conduct policy and have now received my first warning. One more slip up and I am on probation. In the mean time I have to take a 50 dollar alcohol awareness class, and the school will call my parents explaining that I have been consuming alcohol on campus.

The lady explained, "It doesn't even matter if you drank a drop. You were aware there was alcohol on the premises so you are held responsible for everything including underage drinking on a dry campus."

Looks like my original conclusion, you know the one where I decided not to drink or go to drinking college parties, still holds. This punishment sure teaches me a lesson... it just happens to be the one that I learned on my own..without spending 50 bucks.

  1. Oh man. That's intense. I have a feeling that there are many students who break that policy and get away with it though...
