Beards add character. The dark layers of well groomed hair folding over the aged flesh, on top of the skull that shapes your face. Thick and mysterious, the facial hair is a shield; it blocks the icy sleet that mother-nature blasts at you. The ancient curls are waves in the ocean of life's experiences. Twists and turns lost in itself fade; the massive unit of fur withstands the chill of heartache, guarding the frowns of time.
The beard can be a future goal; when the length is at your liking, you have accomplished the goal. It is also a toy for your hands; something to play with and twirl when you're anxious or nervous.
The wiry flip of pokey greatness can define you; It may be the growth you need to get through a difficult time. Maybe a somber spread to accent your kind eyes, or a humble hue to add a smile to someones face, if not your own.
I think I may grow a beard. Time will tell.

I haven't seen my husband's chin in 16 years. And I'm totally not sad about that. In the winter he grows it out to stay warm when he is stuck walking around in the mountain passes. When we visited a synagogue we'd never been to he was mistaken for a visiting orthodox rabbi and caused the cantor to trip over the bima taking in the chest length curly glory. And I'm pretty sure our pets think he is one of them. :) Grow a beard!
ReplyDeleteBeards are yucky. Sometimes a very short and well kept beard is okay and looks nice, but mostly beards are just yucky. Of course this is the opinion of a lesbian, so it doesn't count for much. Many of my straight friends love men with facial hair, body hair, unibrows, etc. One of my primary motivations for being with women is that they smooth almost everywhere so I have a really hard time understanding why anyone would want to curl up with a bear. Eww. It gives me the heaves.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand I grew up in the land of cowboy poetry and those guys have amazing art on their faces. So from an artist's perspective if someone makes an artistic statement with their facial hair I can appreciate that. But it should really be impressive.
ReplyDeleteYour lesbianistic comments intrigue me..haha
